A bus driver of Arab descent was fired this week after making a racist remark at an Ethiopian security guard at the entrance to the Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus campus.

“Perhaps you should drink milk and be white like me,” the driver told the guard, who later filed a complaint with the Egged bus company.

BILIN, West Bank - In an embarrassing blow to Israel, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the state to redraw the route of its West Bank separation barrier near a Palestinian village that has come to symbolize opposition to the enclosure.

Residents of the village of Bilin went to court arguing that the current route, built on village land, kept them from their fields and orchards, which remained on the other side of the barrier. Villagers and their Israeli and foreign supporters have protested at the barrier every Friday for the past 2 1/2 years, routinely sparring with police in clashes that have wounded dozens.

The Israeli government argued that the route was necessary to protect residents of the nearby settlement of Modiin Illit, and completed the section of fence that cut through Bilin's lands despite the protests.

A three-judge Supreme Court panel unanimously rejected the government's argument Tuesday, ordering defense planners to change the barrier's route so it causes less harm to the village's residents.

"We were not convinced that it is necessary for security-military reasons to retain the current route that passes on Bilin's lands," Chief Justice Dorit Beinish wrote in the decision.

The judges specified that "this will require destroying the existing fence in certain places and building a new one," and ordered the government to come up with a new route in a "reasonable period of time."

Israel's Supreme Court has made several such rulings in the past, ordering authorities to move the fence in several parts of the West Bank.

As word of the ruling got out, elated Bilin residents poured out of homes and schools and headed toward the fence. Gathering near several army jeeps, they chanted "We won," and "They demolished the Berlin wall, we want to demolish the Bilin wall."

Abdullah Abu Rahma, one of the leaders of the weekly protest, jubilantly honked the horn of his Honda jeep.

"We went to court, hired the best lawyers in Israel and we won," he said. Abu Rahma termed the ruling "wonderful," but said villagers would keep fighting until the fence was moved entirely off Bilin's land.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement that it would "study the ruling and respect it."

Israel began building the 425-mile barrier — a combination of concrete walls, fences, trenches and patrol roads — along the West Bank in 2002, saying it was a necessary weapon in its war against Palestinian suicide bombers. But the barrier juts into West Bank territory, provoking Palestinian claims that Israel is using security arguments to mask a land grab.

In order to divert attention from the real criminals of apartheid in this world [or to disperse their populations' resentment of the oppressive regimes, after all, what else can can so 'unify' that intolerant culture than common hatred?], and much much worse then that [to say the least], they, in their collective hatred & Apartheid motivation against the ‘non Arab’ the ‘non Muslim’ entity AKA Israel, to deny it’s right to exist, have come up with a myth about “apartheid in Israel”, what it actually means is that if democratic & free Israel dares to defend it’s self from a Racist Arab terrorist it is doomed to be branded as an “apartheid” system.



The sad part is of course that some have been bought by Arab oil money like Jimmy Carter, but the world should not let the magic sand cover the Arabian monsters including those “freedom fighters” fascists in Gaza that oppress Christians or those “moderate” ‘Palestinians’ that try to ethnic cleanse all Jews from the land, and so far there’s not one Jewish family under “moderate” fascist ‘palestine’.

    But it calls Israeli restrained minimal defense-of-lives actions against terror aggression as "aggressive".



  • Not only don't they appreciate Israel's beautiful treatment of it's minorities including favoring it's Arab citizens over Israeli Jewish majority in court cases, in access to the holy-site of the temple mount, (not excluding known Muslim fascists living inside Israel that call for racist genocide of the Jews & ethnic cleansing & voice their opinion openly in Israel's free equal democracy) & in the imbalance unfairness in obligating Israeli Jews to serve in the army, whereas Arabs are exempt.

    But it calls Israel's security check points after arresting Israeli Arabs in terror activities as "racism".



  • Not only don't they appreciate Israel's aid & humanitarian help for "Palestinians" including free treatment in hospitals for many "Palestinian" kids injured due to "Palestinian" -- crimes against humanity -- adults' violent intifadah... using their kids as weapons or as shields, as well as basically feeding much of their population.

    But it interprets Israeli shielding themselves from Arab attackers, shooting behind little kids as "crimes against humanity".



  • Not only don't they appreciate Israel's ongoing gestures to "Palestinians" crossing over to the Israeli side, looking away strict anti terror measures, when "Palestinians" not only practice apartheid against Jews, but Hamas raises it's Islamic Apartheid against Christian Arabs too.

In no way can the treatment of Arabs by the State of Israel be compared to the treatment of the Blacks of South Africa under apartheid. There is no Israeli ideology, policy or plan to segregate, persecute or mistreat the Arab population. Democracy is the cornerstone of the State of Israel. Israel makes no distinction between its Arab and Jewish citizens. Israeli Arab citizens enjoy the same rights as their Jewish neighbors. They are also free to practice their religion without discrimination, in accordance with Israel's commitment to democracy and freedom. As in every country, much more needs to be done to promote greater educational and employment opportunities for minorities, particularly for Israeli Arabs. The Israeli government has committed to investing in the necessary infrastructure and assistance for these communities.

If you guessed that the barrier in question was Israel’s West Bank security fence, guess again. It surrounds the Spanish enclave of Melilla, on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, a remnant of Spain’s colonial past. Morocco argues, with considerable regional support, that Melilla and another Spanish coastal enclave, Ceuta, are in fact occupied Moroccan territory, and must be returned.



As the Wall Street Journal—Europe pointed out in a recent editorial (Sept. 26), there are two major differences between the fence around Melilla and Israel’s security barrier. One is that no-one is protesting that this fence is illegal, a barrier to peace or a land grab, and no-one calls it an "apartheid wall", even though its intent is very much to separate people along largely ethnic lines. In fact, the EU, which has protested so vigorously against Israel’s barrier, is actually helping Spain to fund the fence.



The other difference is the intent — the Melilla barrier is not intended to save lives or prevent terrorism. It is there to keep out largely sub-Saharan Africans looking for a better life in Europe, and who become free to move about Europe once they get into Melilla, which is a part of Spain and thus a part of the EU.

In response to William Keil (letter, Jan. 14):
My issue with former President Carter's book was that incorrect facts are used in the book and the charge of racism made against Israel is wrong.

An employee of former President Carter quit his employ in protest against the factual errors in the book. Conclusions based on errors cannot be relied upon.

Consider the following facts and decide who is practicing racism:

  • Israel has approximately one million Arab citizens who enjoy full equality under the law. The legal code of the Palestinian Authority specifically prohibits sale of property to a Jew.

  • Hebrew University accepts all students, including Arabs, on an equal basis. Jewish and Arab students attend classes together. Palestinian schools teach their children to hate the Jews.

  • Prior to 1948, Jewish immigrants to the area were met by Arab hostility, although the immigrants purchased their farmland and became hard-working farmers.

  • In 1948, the Israelis were attacked by neighboring states, although there were no Jewish settlers in these states.

  • The United Nations has passed resolutions attacking measures taken by the Israeli government, but it has never condemned attacks by Palestinians on Israeli civilians.

    Mr. Keil questions
  • Israel's response to U.N. resolutions, but he does not mention the flouting by the Arabs of the 1948 resolution creating the state of Israel.

  • If the Arabs had complied with this resolution and allowed the Israelis to live in peace in their new state, this entire conflict would not have occurred.

  • If the Arabs unilaterally renounce violence and recognize Israel, the violence will end. Unfortunately, if the Israelis unilaterally lay down their arms, they will be wiped out.

Former US President Jimmy Carter has joined those who accuse Israel of establishing a system of Apartheid

This is an insidious lie based on a false analogy. Apartheid was founded on spurious theories of racial hierarchy, the superiority of certain skin colours and physical features, and the separation of so-called races to avoid contamination. It’s an absurd doctrine, designed to justify prejudice, rationalise oppression and legalise economic exploitation.
It’s nothing new. Similar systems have existed throughout history. Untouchables in India; non-Moslems in Islam.
Israel’s policy towards the Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza is not Apartheid. Carter makes the analogy by taking an array of incidents and administrative measures, and forming them into an ideology. His reasoning is a sham: Israel has a strategy for security; it is not based on racist dogma. In fact Israel itself is a multiracial country and has consistently aimed to be a part of a peaceful, prosperous Middle East; it is the Arabs who have remained intransigent, persecuting and expelling Jews, rejecting the Jewish state based on their own bigoted intolerance.
Carter recoils from the security fence, citing examples of people who have been disadvantaged by its construction; he dismisses the function of the wall, its role in stifling the recent terrorist campaign, implying instead that its purpose is to establish Apartheid.
Carter is offended by the checkpoints and Israel’s policing methods, forgetting that they’re a response to waves of Moslem assassins sent into Israel to kill Jews, and that every time we relax our guard, new attacks follow; instead he sees Israel’s security clampdown as an attempt to impose Apartheid.
Carter may have plenty of Jewish friends, but in his dotage he’s developing the mindset of an anti-Semite: whatever a Jew does there must be some evil intention behind it; and whatever evil occurs, there must be a Jew behind it.

Parents in Moldova, Ethiopia, Gaza and Hebron send their children — weak, lethargic, their skin sometimes tinged blue from lack of oxygen — to a hospital in Holon, Israel. Three weeks later, returned to their parents, the youngsters are able to kick around a soccer ball.
